Show Review

On stage, The Colourist is a highly caffeinated outfit gushing giddy sounding indie pop anthems while traveling the country with the likes of Metric, The Naked and Famous, and Fitz and The Tantrums. When the band popped by Baeble HQ for a session a few weeks back, we were surprised to hear the acoustic alignment they arranged themselves in was a fairly new challenge the quartet had ventured into. Taking a whirl through our latest 3 song set you wouldn't know it though. The band pumps springy life into "Little Games" and "Yes Yes"; two highlights from their recently released EP, Lido. They also stripped things back even more, premiering a reserved duet, "Stray Away", for an audience for the first time. Yes, that means this is only place to hear it. In between, Adam Castilla and Maya Tuttle filled us in on what their life as a band has been like so far, sharing personal anecdotes from recordings and advice gleamed from the likes of Emily Haynes as they learn the ins and outs of being a successful, touring banda privilege this band obviously isn't taking for granted. Have a look and listen to a bright young band we'll be leading the cheering section for in the months to come with this brand new session with our friends, The Colourist.

- I think each song has got its own chemistry.
I mean, it's pretty upbeat.
A lot of the times the lyrics say otherwise.
- Hi! I'm Maya.
- I'm Adam.
We're The Colourist.
- We jokingly refer to our music as majestic jungle rock, or something like that, but it is something that is hard to describe for us.
I mean, we get the California Sound sort of thing.
But what Adam's talking about is absolutely correct.
I think we have this push and pull between really upbeat music, but then sometimes talking about a subject matter that might be a little more dark, and you don't realize what you're singing along to or something.
I saw you messin' around.
We were down and times were rough.
But was the light that you found
On the other side enough?
What did I do so wrong?
You lied and led me on.
Was I your hit and run?
Left for dead and now you're gone.
Oh, we were comin' around.
You threw me back down.
You had my trust in your hands.
You gave it up again.
We were comin' around.
So far from dealin' with all these little games
Holdin' in so much you could drown,
When you knew that times were tough.
But I've had enough with you down
With your hands facing up.
What did I do so wrong?
You lied and led me on
Was I your hit and run?
Left for dead and now you're gone
Oh, we were comin' around
You threw me back down
You had my trust in your hands
You gave it up again
We were comin' around
So far from dealin' with all these
little games,
With all these little games
I feel you far, too far away.
Would you need to, need to stay?
I'm feeling far away,
So far from seeing,
Why would you even stay?
You're so deceiving
I'm feeling far away
So far from seeing,
Why would you even stay?
Oh, we were comin' around
You threw me back down
You had my trust in your hands
You gave it up again
We were comin' around
So far from dealin' with all these little games
Oh, we were comin' around
You threw me back down
You had my trust in your hands.
You gave it up again.
We were comin' around So far from dealin' with all these little
games,
With all these little games
- The acoustic setup has been pretty new to us, and we've been adapting, and we're so used to the live show being big and intricate.
Now we come and, as far as learning and transferring the songs over from a really loud atmosphere to a quieter one has been a lot of fun actually.
We've been doing it on the road and it's been turning out pretty cool.
- It's totally a new thing for us.
Cause on stage, you know, the guys are switching instruments, and I have like 14 drums around me and I'm trying to do all this stuff, but it's very cool to reinvent the songs for small spaces like this.
We love these intimate settings.
It's really cool.
One, two, three, four
My love is of course love
Anybody who tells you differently
They'll lie to confuse you
They'll do anything to take you from me
Yes yes, they've been jealous
Of the time spent between you and me
They've been talking, even plotting
Of a way they could steal you from me
Of a way they could steal you from me
Of a way they could steal you from me
You've been down, down for days and days
But searching for another won't fix a thing
You've been down, down for days and days
But searching for another won't fix a thing
No, searching for another won't fix a thing
This time may be the last time that I see you
Just believe in me, don't be leaving me
I'll do anything to keep you with me
Don't be fooled by the words of deceit
Keep it in from falling out, don't let them talk me down
As a way they could steal you from me
As a way they could steal you from me
You've been down, down for days and days But searching for another won't fix a thing
You've been down, down for days and days But searching for another won't fix a thing
No, searching for another won't fix a thing
Take my hand
You're slipping, it's so dark out
We've been trying to walk
But you've been talking
Like life is rushing past while we're just sitting tight
But nothing's going to change until you look inside
No, nothing's going to change until you look inside
You've been down, down for days and days
But searching for another won't fix a thing
You've been down, down for days and days But searching for another won't fix a thing
No, searching for another won't fix a thing
this year and we've been lucky enough to share the stage with Metric, and, New Atlas Genius, and now we're on tour with The Naked and Famous.
And it has absolutely been where we could sort of garner advice from these people that have been doing it for longer that we're also fans of.
So, yeah, we had a moment where Emily Haines gave us some advice after a show, and The Naked and Famous are absolutely amazing, and they've just been there for us when we had questions, or when we just wanted to hang out.
You never think, but it's really long hours as a touring musician.
We're lucky to have a great crew workng with us, but man, you get up, you start driving, and sometimes you don't even get to stop in the city you're playing in.
You just get to meet the people that come to the show.
But yeah, it's pretty exhausting.
But it's a labor of love, absolutely, for all of us.
morning from the late nights, so it's kind of a combination of both.
I know we just met
but I fear what's to come of us
If I continue to fall for you.
And I know I can't judge from the past
I just fear this won't last
And I'll be alone again.
I don't want to fall in love
I don't want to fall in love
I don't want to fall in love
But I fear it's too late
To let love stray away.
It's always good from the start,
But after time what will come of us
If I continue to fall for you?
And I know I can't judge from the past
I just fear this won't last
And I'll be alone again
I don't want to fall in love
I don't want to fall in love
I don't want to fall in love
But I fear it's too late to let love
stray away
And I fear it's too late to let love
stray away
And I fear it's too late to let love
stray away
And I fear it's too late to let love
stray away
So I guess I'll take the chance,
And the chance is if we take it slow,
You'll be the last one I'll love.
wanna see more.
Like, we wanna go out and tour a lot.
- We would love to go around the world, the same way that we've done the U.
S.
I think that would be incredible.
But other than that, we're just continuing to write great music.
We're getting ready for a full-length at some point next year, so, yeah, I think we're just gonna keep going, as Adam says.
Hi.
We're The Colourist, and you're watching Baeble Music.

Artist Bio

The Colourist first stumbled upon one another in an underused warehouse in Orange County, CA, where Adam and Maya discovered the harmonic chemistry that has come to define the bands bright and anthemic signature sound.
