Show Review

Hanson is no nostalgia act. Nostalgia does not hold up consistently for twenty one years. It may come back for a moment...a quickly passing trend or a flash of reminiscence for the easier, breezier bygone days. But Isaac, Taylor, and Zac took the ubiquitous pop cultural moment they created with "MMMBop" and fueled their ever enthusiastic fan base with album after album of meticulously crafted and precisely executed American pop music. In celebration of Anthem, the band's sixth LP, we recently invited these fair haired idols to brave both our six story walk-up and a scorching hot afternoon to share a slew of their latest songs, including Anthem's soulful single "Get The Girl Back", the organ-tinged rocker, "Cut Right Through Me", as well as "Thinking 'Bout Somethin'", from their 2010 release Shout It Out. In between the brothers discuss how their new music lives up to the spirit that inspired their new album. If you loved Hanson in 1997 you'll love Hanson more than ever. And if you didn't? Well, we suggest getting reacquainted with this Oklahoma based power trio. Just don't call it nostalgic, 'cause these guys whip up some of the best new music we've come across all year.

- My name is Isaac and I'm in a band called Hanson and I play guitar and sing some stuff.
- Hi I'm Zac.
I'm an independent drummer that happens to be playing for Hanson for the last 21 years.
- Hi my name is Taylor Hanson.
- If somebody would pay me more, I would definitely take it.
These guys are terrible.
She's about to walk away
So if you're gonna make her wanna stay Tell her she's your moon and sun
Tell her that she's always been the one You've gotta say it from the heart
Cause she will know a fake right from the start
A girl like that deserves the best
So you've got to show her (show her!) that
you're not like all the rest It's about time that you put your cards
back on the table It's about time that you show her you're
willing and able It's about time
that you get the girl back
you get the girl back on your side You've got to get the girl back, get the
girl back Cause you've got to get the girl back
Tell her she was always right You were in the wrong, you can't deny
once she's got somebody's eye
It will be too late to apologize
Before she shuts you out, oh yeah! You've got to tell her (tell her) just
tell her that there is no doubt It's about time that you put your cards
back on the table It's about time that you show her you're
willing and able It's about time that you get the girl back
you get the girl back on your side, ooh You've got to get the girl back, get the
girl back You've got to get your girl back
You've got to get the girl back, get the girl back, back on your side
Get the girl back, get the girl back, back on your side.
Get the girl back, get the girl back, back on your side
Get the girl back, get the girl back, got to got to get your girl back
Get the girl back, back on your side Get the girl back, get the girl back,
Cause it's, it's about time, for you to get the girl
It's about time, ooh woah noo, ooh woah noo
Get the girl, get the girl back, back on your side
Get the girl, get the girl back, back on your side
Get the girl, get the girl back, back on your side
Get the girl back, you've got to get the girl back!
- Get the girl back is the first single and to me it's the perfect bridge from the last album.
It's an anthem for the ongoing battle between guys and guy and the girl then try to figure out how to balance it all like so often, so often, as the dude we're often coming back from whatever we did wrong.
You know and need that little encouragement.
- You can do it.
- You got to get the girl back.
You got to fix that and it's inspired by a lot of soul music that we love and classic 60's mo-town records.
- To me, the great thing about playing the song is different ways, acoustic or electric is just the challenge for yourself and also the challenge it gives to the music you've written because you really want the song to still speak in a lot of different environments not only in different environments that people are gonna play it in.
You know listen to it your buds or a great sound system or in a car but also when you play it with an acoustic guitar, you play it with a big horn section or you play it you know in a loud crazy club where people can barely hear like you still want the song a to speak and have the energy and so it's fun to be challenged in that way and to get actually break it down and hear the vocals, hear the lyrics in a different way to play the song.
- I would say this is with out a doubt my favorite performance of songs from anthem on a roof top in New York City.
I thought I was so tough
Who knew you could play so rough I've got to slow down cause you spun my
head around You read me so well
You make it hard to tell Why all my words fail when I stop, you
begin To cut right through me
You cut right through me I can't explain how you do what you're
doing You cut right through me
You cut right through me I can't turn away I don't know how you do
it
I say a word and you say too much You take a piece of everything you touch
You cut right through me, yeah Without a second look
You caught me on your hook I never felt like that, gave me a heart
attack I can't recover
You're not like the others It doesn't matter where I start,
To cut right through me To cut right through me
I can't explain how you do what you're doing
You cut right through me You cut right through me
I can't turn away I don't know how you do it
Oh yeah I say a word and I said too much
You take a piece of everything you touch You cut right through me, yeah
Like a mystery, you're alluring You're disarming me, and you know it
Cause you're disarming me Cause you cut right through me
I can't explain how you do You cut right through me
You cut right through me I can't explain, I can't explain, I can't
explain You cut right through me
You cut right through me I can't turn away, can't turn away, can't
turn away Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Cause you cut right through me
- When you name an album Anthem, you're sort of putting yourself out there.
I mean really truthfully music doesn't you know you can't claim it as an anthem until it becomes one, but when we we're making these record, we were just really inspired by bigger sounds like that the record just has an intensity.
It's driven more by guitar.
And from the very beginning we just sort of imagine the idea of connecting with the audience, with the music and I think what defines this record is that idea of the choruses of songs from the songs that's an anthem for the fight and the pregame anthem that gets you pumped up.
- Fired up.
- You know the Summer Time Anthem, the love song that is the kind of the lighter goes in the air and this an album that short and tight and pretty fast and I think it kind of boils it down to one of the thing, a lot of, the influences that we have from R&B, to rock, they just, they come through but in this case they come through with a more bold way.
- In some ways also too the title Anthem is in a way us saying these are our anthems.
These are kind of our songs and our way of expressing our selves in the music and the things that we can get excited about and get passionate about.
So, what keep us excited to keep doing music together now after 21 years ... - It's the music.
- I would say yeah the music itself is always, it's always exciting to have the opportunity to go back in the studio and write new songs.
I mean your, there's always things that you haven't quite achieved, yet.
You know.
- I think several things, one, the cycle of making records and touring.
I think it's really beneficial to the creative process.
Where you have gaps, where you really don't have to be thinking about being creative.
You get to sort of enjoy what you have created and let that get you excited and ready for the next really strong creative process.
But the, the other thing is, I think the interesting thing is innovation and sort of the next evolution of your band is always sort of the same distance from you right beyond your finger tips where you're reaching for it to try find that thing that feels fresh and so that is always difficult and exciting and challenging and I think if you're an artist that likes the challenge which I think is what keeps a lot of people making music and I know we do then it's still exciting whenever you have a challenge.
It's like give me a job to do.
Give me something you know somebody tell me I can't do that, somebody hear a great artist and feel like wow that was great I wanna be you know that good I wanna be that's strong then it makes you sort of you wanna step up to that.
- You're hungry for the next challenge, hungry for the next idea to be creative and then you're looking around you and being inspired by things so there's always something new to be inspired by.
There's never a limit to that.
Well I gave you love, you know it So when did you outgrow it
And decide to would find another man? Well you've been out there shakin'
The tail the boys are chasing When you get home you think I'll be the
bigger man I've been thinkin' bout somethin'
I've been thinkin' bout somethin' other than you
I ignored your reputation Cause you send my heart racing
You think I would always be the fool Well I've run out of patience
For this sticky situation You won't find me crying that we're
through
I've been thinkin' bout somethin'
I've been thinkin' bout somethin' other than you
It's sad to say, but baby everyday I've been thinkin' bout somethin'
I've been thinkin' bout somethin' other than you
Well if you're not too proud to beg I can give you some respect
But the tune you hum is never gonna change You didn't have to do what you did
But I thank you it ended like this Cause the love I've got is better than
what you gave Well I've got girls in line
Waiting for these arms of mine Listen up now to what I say
I've been thinkin' bout somethin' I've been thinkin' bout somethin' other
than you It's sad to say, but baby everyday
I've been thinkin' bout somethin' I've been thinkin' bout somethin' other
than you Hey, hey, to the bridget
I've had enough of your tainted love you give me everyday
I tried to limit the lonely nights
But I'm done getting played, come on, come on
yeah I'm not gonna make that same mistake
You've been out there foolin', but I'm not thinkin' bout you
I've been getting the love that moves me, while you've been getting around
You've been out there foolin', but I'm not thinkin' bout you
I've been getting the love that moves me, while you've been getting around
You've been out there foolin', but I'm not thinkin' bout you
I've been getting the love that moves me,
while you've been getting around

Artist Bio

Hanson is an American pop-rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma formed by brothers Isaac (guitar, piano, vocals), Taylor (keyboards, piano, guitar, drums, vocals), and Zac Hanson (drums, piano, guitar, vocals). They are best known for the 1997 hit song "MMMBop" from their major label debut album Middle of Nowhere, which earned three Grammy nominations. Despite the enormous commercial success of Middle of Nowhere, the band suffered from the merger that eliminated their label, Mercury Records. The group was moved to Island Def Jam Music Group, which they eventually left after conflict with the label about creative input. Hanson has sold over 16 million records worldwide and have had eight top 40 singles in the UK and six top 40 singles in the US. The band now records under its own label, 3CG Records.
