Show Review

If we believe what we've been told by every YA novel and rom-com to ever exist, summer means reckless adventures and dreamy teenage romance. Singer-songwriter Chelsea Cutler provides the perfect soundtrack for all your summertime festivities, whether you're road tripping to the beach or watching the sunset over the city skyline. Cutler's writing is effortless, and our exclusive session with the rising star proves she's one to keep a close eye on this year.

Considering how much raw talent she possesses, it's surprising to hear the 20-year-old admit she never intended to make a career out of playing music. Cutler learned guitar and piano when she was young and later, like so many hopeful independent artists, began posting covers on SoundCloud. After tackling the work of everyone from Odesza and the Chainsmokers to Jack Johnson and The Tallest Man on Earth in her repertoire, Cutler's own unique blend of electronic and acoustic sounds started to take shape.

We got to witness Cutler's brilliance during a stripped-back session at Baeble HQ this spring. Just her and a guitar, Cutler's delicate vocals filled the space with the confidence of a seasoned performer. Stepping out from the shadow of electronic production, Cutler gives her impressive lyrics a chance to breathe. If you're in the mood for some youthful summertime nostalgia, you won't want to miss this captivating performance.

person, in general.
And I'm not a math person or a science person.
Words have kind of always been my thing.
I think it's just an amazing way to express yourself.
Hey, what's up, guys? This is Chelsea Cutler.
You're watching Baeble Music.
This time it don't feel like you want it all
Did I do something wrong to make you go?
Said I would know when it's all good to fall
Now I just need you here to hold me close
'Cause I don't want another heart to fill the holes
that you left under my covers for me to grow cold
I don't want to miss somebody who's not missing me,
but the city feels so lonely when you leave
My room, where I want you tangled ease in my sheets,
in your shirt that I got you half asleep, holding on to me
My bed, where you left me tangled up, now it's noon,
in your shirt that you gave me half asleep, wishing I still had you
This time you said you're playing games again
What are we becoming of it now?
It's fine, I said, if you're the one in my head,
'cause I just don't know how to put you out
I don't want another heart to fill the holes
that you left under my covers for me to grow cold
I don't want to miss somebody who's not missing me,
but the city feels so lonely when you leave, yeah
My room, where I want you tangled ease in my sheets,
in your shirt that I got you half asleep, holding on to me
My bed, where you left me tangled up, now it's noon
in your shirt that you gave me half asleep, wishing I still had you
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
I'm half asleep, wishing I still had you
- It all started because I didn't want to play a sport at my boarding school.
So instead of playing a sport, they agreed to let me learn how to use the recording studio at my school.
And I recorded an Odessa cover, and I put that up on Soundcloud.
And that just started this whole kind of trend of like, me putting up covers.
And then I started writing songs and putting those up.
And I never intended to sign with a label.
I never really intended to like, do this as a career.
And then just the greatest stroke of luck happened, and Ultra kind of really organically found me.
Then I was just like, "Oh, okay.
I could do this for a living.
Let's give it a shot.
" Wake up 'cause the evening's running Away from the hands of the youth
- Yeah, so Wake Up was the first thing I ever really put up on Soundcloud like, my first original project.
And, wow, I just never expected it to be a catalyst for everything that's happened.
Wake up 'cause the evening's running Away from the hands of the youth
Hold fast 'cause the daylight's coming It'll hit when it dawns on you
Take it if it's yours to take Go sleep in the bed you made
I know it's never been easy to say what you never could say
But you'll wait so long.
You'll wait so long
And I've been counting all the passing days
you keep hiding in the back room It's taken a while to find you
Covered in blue, And they've been watching as you walk away
from all you leave in the past I never thought I could save you,
even if it's the last thing I do
Move on 'cause the world is moving along right in front of you
If you don't stop for a while, you might miss a perfect view
You'll wait so long You'll wait so long
I've been counting all the passing days you keep hiding in the back room
It's taken a while to find you, Covered in blue
And they've been watching as you walk away from all you leave in the past
I never thought I could save you, even if it's the last thing I do
I won't stop and go and let another day unfold
I miss the feeling that you get when you can have it all
I won't stop and go and let another day unfold
I miss the feeling that you get when you can have it all
I've been counting all the passing days, you keep hiding in the back room
It's taken a while to find you, Covered in blue
And they've been watching as you walk away from all you leave in the past
I never thought I could save you, even if it's the last thing I do
Even if it's the last thing I do
- My life has changed in ways I never expected to be possible.
I mean, I've gone out to LA.
I never thought I'd make it out to LA.
Working, just being in a studio, like, having support on my music that I never thought possible.
I just feel like I've really kind of assembled the best team one could ever ask for.
Waking up back home in New York City
I know I missed you, and I hope you miss me too, yeah
The days away leave me feeling so empty
I can't wait 'til I can take you with me, ooh yeah
Say you're going to stay with me Don't you let me go, no
You're the kind of love I need You already know, know
Come back home late and fall into your bed
Every time I feel it over again
You're throwing fuel into my fire Racing, making me bleed
Do you still feel it in your chest, the way you did at sixteen?
Didn't know I was alive, until you made my heart beat
Thought my youth was going quickly, but you give me sixteen
I'm trying to find my way through L.A.X
And I'm still lost, don't know what to expect, ooh, yeah
Growing up means growing tired I guess, yeah
But nothing gets me when I'm right here next to you, yeah
Say you're going to stay with me Don't you let me go, no
You're the kind of love I need You already know, know
Come back home late and fall into your bed
Every time I feel it over again
You're throwing fuel into my fire Racing, making me bleed
Do you still feel it in your chest, the way you did at sixteen?
Didn't know I was alive, until you made my heart beat
Thought my youth was going quickly, but you give me sixteen
Do you still feel it? Do you still feel it?
Do you still feel it? Do you still feel it?
I thought my youth was going quickly, but you give me sixteen
You're throwing fuel into my fire Racing, making me bleed
Do you still feel it in your chest, the way you did at sixteen?
Didn't know I was alive until you made my heart beat
Thought my youth was going quickly, but you give me sixteen
- For me, writing music has been the only thing that's really kind of slowed me down, like, a sense.
Like, makes me feel okay.
And that's all I could ever ask for it to do for other people.

Artist Bio

A lot has changed for Chelsea Cutler in a year. The 20-year old singer, songwriter, producer has come a long way from recording songs in her bedroom as she gets ready to release her debut EP.

Chelsea started playing music at a very early age (she learned piano, guitar, cello, and drums by the time she was 10), but it wasn't until high school that she found a lane for her own sound as an artist. Around the time emerging electronic artists like Kygo and Odesza were coming to the forefront, she was inspired to take these new sounds and turn them acoustic.

She began uploading unique acoustic covers to Soundcloud, where she'd blend a medley of these songs (along with many others), carried by her dreamy voice which has the ability to grab the listener immediately. The covers quickly accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams and caught the attention of artists, blogs, and labels. Shortly after, she wrote and recorded her first original song "Wake Up" in her bedroom, which also showcased her inapt writing ability and ultimately landed her a deal with Ultra Records.

"Your Shirt" is the first single off her fully self-written and self-produced debut EP, coming this Spring. Chelsea explains, "The song is about that moment after a breakup when you wake up in an empty bed and it all hits you that it's really over. Im excited to lead with it because I think it really represents my growth as an artist from both the writing and the production."

In addition to her own artist project, Chelsea has recently lent her vocals and writing on songs for Adventure Club, Chet Porter, and Kidswaste. She will also be featured upcoming singles for Louis The Child EP, ayokay, and Quinn XCII.
