Show Review

Life's biggest moments rarely work without a soundtrack. That's why weddings have first dances, athletes have walk-up songs, and road trips have playlists. Back in 2013 no song seemed to resonate more with those seeking to set that special moment to song than American Authors' "Best Day of My Life". It was everywhere, accompanying videos of proposals, marathons, vacations, singing competitions, even freakin' Kidz Bop. The song was a phenomenon, one the band is still trying to wrap their head around. "It become a lot of people's anthems", singer Zac Barnett recently told us. "Which is cool".

It took us a while (it seems like we've been asking for 2 years) but we finally had the band soundtrack our own momentous moment when they stopped by our Brooklyn digs for a rousing, euphoric session of new songs, plus the obligatory American Authors classic. Here the quartet strip down; a formation that agrees with the group in that it harks back to their roots and serves as a reminder that they are real musicians. Our session also finds the band at an interesting time in their career. They've nearly finished their follow-up to their debut, Oh What A Life. They are looking ahead, but appreciating their journey to date...a story that they're once again creating the perfect soundtrack to.

to us, to just jam out and play acoustic.
Which is really getting back to our roots, of how we started out.
Just jamming in a living room or at a practice space back in college.
For us to be able to do something like this and constantly be reminded, like, "Oh yeah, we're real musicians.
We can strip down, and we can play our instruments, and we can sing.
" - Do it all, I think that's important for pop music as well Don't feel like going home, but all my cash is gone
Yeah, I got nothing to do tonight
I'm passed out on the floor, up in the hotel bar,
but it don't matter, because I'm feeling fine
I'm thinking life's too short, it's passing by
So if we're gonna go at all, go big or go
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
I gave the dice a roll, and then we lost control
You know we're lucky that we survived
But then we jumped the ship Oh man, that boat, it flipped
but we should do it all again tonight
I'm thinking life's too short, it's passing by
So if we're gonna go at all, go big or go...
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Giving my body all the things I need
Rescue me with a little whiskey
Staying out, don't need no sleep
I'll sleep when I'm dead, you can bury me
I'll sleep when I'm dead, you can bury me
I guess I'm going home Because all my cash is gone
I spent it all trying to feel alive
Go big or go...
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
Go, go! Go big or go home
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
It's getting crazy
we're gonna do some things that we won't forget
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
I'm going crazy
I'm gonna live my life, I've got no regrets
Go, go! Go big or go oh oh home
- Yeah, really man, that's it, man.
Go big or go home on it.
That's what we did with our music, and even now when we're out on the road, we don't just sit around in our hotel rooms, we try to take advantage as much as we can with the opportunities that are placed before us.
I know everyone has their own path.
For us it was we just had to keep writing better songs, and get better and better until we did write those right songs that really reacted with people.
You've gotta be committed too.
If you're really passionate about it you've gotta go all in.
None of us had backup plans.
We weren't working towards anything else.
People ask us a lot, "If you weren't a musician right now, what would you be? If you weren't where you're at today, what would you be doing?" And we say we'd be broke musicians.
We'd still be struggling artists.
It'd be the same thing.
second album now.
One thing that really resonated with me in the creation process of this was that we went in with one of these new...well, not really new, but he's an old school writer, he's a big writer.
He told me something I don't think I'll ever forget.
He said, "Don't be afraid to suck.
" I think that that is such a thing you need to know when you're a new writer.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Don't be afraid to give it your all.
Don't be afraid to throw something at the wall and see if it sticks and irk people and take chances, because you never know what you're going to find.
I think a lot of the things that we think about in the band is that the last album was like our, "We want to be able to live this dream and give our music to the world.
" This second album is much more, "We've seen the world, and now we're ready to tell stories about our travels.
" - We're American Authors, and this is our song "Pride.
" - One, two, one, two, three, four.
My home don't feel the same
Last year flew by, goodbye to the good vibes
and what we thought were the best times
Nights out with the people I love
I'm lost in the neighborhood
that raised me, praised me, made me who I am
And my father was twice the man, and now that pain's resurfacing
Brooklyn don't feel the same,
maybe I'm the one who's changed or the one to blame
Another dream down the drain and ten more before I get on that plane
I swear I knew just what to say, the salt there on the tip of my tongue
But I don't feel good enough for anyone
No, I won't unfold, I know because
I've got this feeling I ain't never giving up,
I ain't never ever, I ain't never ever giving up my pride
I ain't never letting go, I ain't never ever,
I ain't never ever gonna sell my soul
I got this feeling I got this feeling
I ain't never giving up, I never ever, I ain't never ever
giving up my pride
Pushed out of the family tree, upside down but it was a good life
I fell hard for the wine in France,
I didn't call you back because I was learning to dance
And this is who I've become, the salt air on the tip of my tongue
I wish I was good enough for anyone
No, I won't unfold, oh no, because
I've got this feeling I ain't never giving up,
I ain't never ever, I ain't never ever giving up my pride
I ain't never letting go, I ain't never ever,
I ain't never ever gonna sell my soul
I got this feeling I got this feeling
I ain't never giving up I never ever, I ain't never ever
giving up my pride
Take or leave who I am Because this is me
Like a fish out of water, do I belong here?
But I'm never gonna lose, I'm never giving up my pride
I'm lost in the ocean, like a note in a bottle
But I'm never gonna lose, I'm never giving up my pride
Well this is me, who I am
I ain't never giving up,
I ain't never ever, I ain't never ever giving up my pride
I ain't never letting go, I ain't never ever,
I ain't never ever gonna sell my soul
I got this feeling I got this feeling
I ain't never giving up up, I never ever, I ain't never ever
giving up my pride
Take or leave who I am Because this is me
- The second song that we did is called Pride.
It's a really special song to us.
Like Dave was saying, it's really about being gone for so long with whatever you're doing.
You lose these ties with your family and your friends that at one point you were seeing every single day, and you were really able to build these relationships.
Then you leave, and it's tough to come back to your neighborhood and feel like that's still your home, when now you've really built a life for yourself in another place.
It's how you adjust to that, and how you get back in.
Get back to being comfortable with your family and your friends and your actions around them.
- And not letting it change you.
Never giving up your pride.
Never giving up who you are as a person, where you came from.
Your beginnings.
- For us, our friends and our family, they mean the world to us.
For us to be able to adapt so seamlessly, it's a tough thing.
It's not an overnight process all the time.
That's what this song talks about.
The third song that we played, an oldie but a goody.
The classic American Authors jam, "Best Day of My Life.
" - It was a big, big surprise for all of us.
We didn't even know when somebody hit the go button, but by the time it was over with, "Oh, wow.
That really all just happened.
" - For us, we're so thankful that "Best Day of My Life" really blew up and was as big as it was.
We sit around and we talk about this a lot, we talk about new bands that break and especially music from bands.
Nowadays it's becoming more rare that you see these bands break through.
For us to have a song that really broke through was...it's amazing, dude. It allows us to have opportunities that we might've never had before.
It's pretty incredible.
It's a dream come true.
- The amount of time I've been told, "We had our wedding, and your song made us fall in love," or "We just did this crazy adventure in the Amazon and your song was this thing we did a video to," people sharing... - It's become a lot of people's anthems.
- It's been a cultural phenomenon for a lot of people, and for us to be a part of that is a blessing in itself.
I had a dream so big and loud, I jumped so high I touched the clouds
I stretched my hands out to the sky,
we danced with monsters through the night
I'm never gonna look back, whoa, I'm never gonna give it up, no
Please don't wake me now
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
I howled at the moon with friends, and then the sun came crashing in
But all my possibilities, no limits, just epiphanies
I'm never gonna look back, whoa, I'm never gonna give it up, no
Just don't wake me now
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
I hear it calling outside my window I feel it in my soul
The stars were burning so bright, the sun was out until midnight,
I say we lose control
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
This is gonna be, this is gonna be, this has gotta be
the best day of my life
Well everything is looking up, everybody up now
This is gonna be the best day of my life
My life
