Show Review

Against The Current are an emotional and melodic, electro-punk outfit from Poughkeepsie New York. Swinging through NYC for a slew of press responsibilities, we recently caught up with Chrissy Costanza, Dan Gow, and Will Ferri at Atlantic Recording Studio to get the scoop on their newest album, In Our Bones, as well as hear a few unique interpretations from the record. In Our Bones is a fairly big and anthemic affair, thriving on house rattling beats, beautiful synth work, and scores of other unique, production touches. For their session with Baeble, the band stripped things back in ways they had previously never attempted. Drummer Will Ferri had never really played the keys before...no big deal. While such a dramatic approach might have intimated less adventurous artists, Against The Current enjoyed it. "We're creative people," Costanza explained. "In the space between albums you have to find other ways to keep releasing creative energy into the same songs".

Have I lost my mind? Is this paradise?
Or a darker side? Candy coated lips
You're the sweetest kiss
love driving in New York City, because everyone here is an asshole.
But the truth of it is, is that I'm the bigger asshole, so I win.
- Yeah.
I flipped about five people off. I cut a lot... - Today? - Just today. I got... People were... Today was a day, I feel like a lot of people were angry today.
- I don't even know if I've flipped five people off in the past year.
- It's impressive, it's impressive.
- I can't say I've done that.
- I got it from my momma.
Let's get this right, don't take it slow Let's not pretend we've never met before
Because baby this love is something we both know
But it's been trapped in a cage like an animal
And now we're dancing under streetlights Drunk on twilight
You say yours when I'm calling you mine See your name in the sidewalk cracks
Want to be anywhere you're at All I ever really need is you
And this time we're gonna see this through So if we ever lose our way again
Take my hand we'll make it back You and me are hell-bent on heartbreak
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Don't act like loving me is such a bad thing
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Won't let you run away
Well I told myself it would be alright
But you lurk in the shadows deep inside my mind
No, I couldn't escape all the memories Stuck in my head like pretty melodies
And now we're dancing under streetlights Drunk on twilight
You say yours when I'm calling you mine See your name in the sidewalk cracks
Want to be anywhere you're at All I ever really need is you
And this time we're gonna see this through So if we ever lose our way again
Take my hand we'll make it back You and me are hell-bent on heartbreak
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Don't act like loving me is such a bad thing
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Won't let you run away
Used to be just me and you
Acting like we couldn't lose, oh oh Let's do the things we used to do
If you're the fire, I'm the fuel Just like when our love was new
You and me are hell-bent on heartbreak
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Don't act like loving me is such a bad thing
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
You and me are hell-bent on heartbreak
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Don't act like loving me is such a bad thing
No matter what you say Won't let you run away
Won't let you run away Won't let you run away, no
Won't let you run away
- It's always fun playing acoustic to have a different take on the song, because we play them everyday on tour all year, so it's nice to change it up every now and then.
- Today was really different too, we've never really done anything like this before, the keys and stuff.
- Yes, this is actually the first time.
- It's kind of nerve-wracking.
- Will's never played piano before.
- Basically.
I'm a drummer.
So it was kind of scary.
- What? You play drums? - Yeah, if you didn't know guys, I'm a drummer.
- What? Since when? - I don't know. I'm actually... - And I mean, we are like, we're creative people.
And the one kind of thing about the music industry is it is limiting in a way, where it's like you can't release a record every day So in the space between albums, you kind of have to find other ways to keep releasing creative energy into the same songs, though.
- I think the way we played... we played "Roses," well, the way we played all three songs is pretty cool.
- We do cool things.
- Yeah. We definitely, the goal... - I think we are.
- ...with our acoustic performances, we wanted to kind of bring the music down, and kind of strip it back and really let... - But keep it PG.
- Keep it...stripped down. - Sorry, I'm sorry.
I'll stop.
- And just let the vocal kind of unfold and tell the story more, you know what I mean? Rather with all this... like on the record we kind of just strip everything down, and like Chrissy, say when she sang, and so it comes across more clear, I think.
So it's cool and more intimate, they hopefully make you feel something.
- Yeah.
Waited all night for you to come home
Because I always hated sleeping alone
Watching the roses wither away Wishing my memories would die out the same
I waited all night, yeah, you never came
And I miss the long nights under street lights
When our hearts were made of gold And I miss the feeling that we had then
We were never growing old Yeah, I miss it all
Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh
Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh
And everyone's trying to help me move on
They say it gets better in the long run
You could say that I've had a couple good days
But nobody's eyes shine quite the same way
I waited all night, yeah, you never came
And I miss the long nights under street lights
When our hearts were made of gold And I miss the feeling that we had then
We were never growing old Yeah, I miss it all
Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh Yeah, I miss it all
Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh.
Waited all night for you to come home
Because I always hated sleeping alone
I hope that the lipstick I left on your face
Stays red like the roses I laid on your grave
And I miss the long nights under street lights
When our hearts were made of gold
And I miss the feeling that we had then We were never growing old
Yeah, I miss it all Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh
Yeah, I miss it all Whoa oh, whoa oh, whoa oh
- Our record is called In Our Bones.
We went back and forth with record names when we were trying to come up with the title, and the first couple of titles that we came up with they all sounded cool, but none of them kind of meant anything, I guess.
And then In Our Bones was something that when we said it, even before we talked about it, it all just kind of like, it resonated with all of us.
And then the more we talked about it, the more we realized, yeah, this is what it is.
And it basically just means, it's doing music and having this passion for it, and this drive, and this persistence, and this fire for it.
It's something that it's just, it feels like it's in our genetic makeup, like it's literally in our bones, like...not to be cheesy, but literally in our bones.
Like something that's just so ingrained and a part of us that it was there from the start, and that it was never brought in at any point.
Like maybe it was lit up at some point, like maybe some point in our lives we realized it was there.
But it was kind of always there and it's just such a part of us that we wanted to express that, that this is not just what we do, but it's who we are.
- Wait, I just cut out.
Was that me? Did I do something? - Doing "Chasing Ghosts" with like the keys, I really like being able to pullback, and sing more falsetto, because I just think it blends really well with the keys.
But it kind of has that eerie, haunting sound which is kind of what I wanted "Chasing Ghosts" to like convey, in a way, because it's about ghosts.
- Ghosts, spooky.
- Yeah.
So I mean we get to say the same message, but have a different way of presenting it, which I think is always good because it's just, like I said, giving new life to the same words, the same song.
We used to have a light Now it's too dark to shine
whoa oh, whoa oh
Now we're just passing by Two shipwrecks in the night
whoa oh, whoa oh
Remember when we met? Yeah, I know I was mean
Stones shirt, black boots and black jeans And you were such a mess
And I thought it was sweet But that night still haunts my dreams
I won't keep chasing ghosts I need somebody I can hold
Gave you my heart and soul Thought I was chasing love
I was only chasing a ghost
Thought I was chasing love I was only chasing a ghost
Blue from the TV light, Two bodies intertwined
whoa oh, whoa oh
I guess we tempted fate Always so far away
whoa oh, whoa oh
Remember when we met? Yeah, I know I was mean
Stones shirt, black boots and black jeans
And you were such a mess But I thought it was sweet
That night still haunts my dreams I won't keep chasing ghosts
I need somebody I can hold Gave you my heart and soul
Thought I was chasing love I was only chasing a ghost
Thought I was chasing love I was only chasing a ghost
Remember when you left? Yeah, I thought it was mean
Stones shirt, black boots and everything And I let you fool me twice
Well, shame on me That night still haunts my dreams
I won't keep chasing ghosts No, I need somebody I can hold
Gave you my heart and soul Thought I was chasing love
Thought I was chasing love I was only chasing a ghost
Thought I was chasing love I was only chasing a ghost

Artist Bio

Against the Current are a pop-punk band that formed in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2011. Led by singer Chrissy Costanza, guitarist/singer Dan Gow, and drummer Will Ferri, they initially built up a large following on YouTube covering songs like Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time" and Kelly Clarkson's "Catch My Breath." Their own debut single, "Thinking," arrived in July 2012, followed a year later by "Closer, Faster," the latter of which also appeared on their debut EP Infinity in 2014. Powered by catchy, upbeat melodies and Costanza's strong voice, Against the Current's sound fell more on the pop side of the spectrum. After an all-acoustic EP, they delivered their third EP, Gravity, in 2015 and caught the attention of respected indie Fueled by Ramen Records. With a new label deal in place, they began issuing singles in early 2016 in anticipation of their full-length debut, In Our Bones, which arrived in May of that year.
