Show Review

EMA stands for Erika M. Anderson, formally one half of the drone-folk duo Gowns. Given her tenure in music, it's no surprise her songs are rooted in noise and grunge. EMA is a born rocker. However, it is a bit strange to see her playing heavy tunes like "Milk Man" with nothing but an acoustic guitar and the range of her vocals, and in some cases, for the first time without a full band. Past Life Martyred Saints is full of dizzying noise and ambiance, but there is something special about cutting to the core of the tunes with nothing but natural resonance. It's like looking at art from a radically different angle. Check out our session and interview, and you may find yourself encouraged to explore EMA's much lauded debut further, even if you've already given it a listen.
