Show Review
Garage rock has been revisited by everyone from Jack White to The Hives, but no one does it quite like Electric Six. Their music is glammed-up garage rock for the New Wave revival, complete with synth solos, campy lyrics, and enough hyperactivity to warrant a band-wide prescription for Adderall.
The Motor City sextet took the Bowery Ballrom's stage in tuxedos and evening wear, looking surprisingly respectable until they ripped into the spastic set-opener "Improper Dancing." "Have you ever been to New York City?" sang frontman Dick Valentine, smiling confidently as the crowd went positively insane in response. An hour of sweaty, high-octane music followed, with lyrics covering such R-rated topics as drug consumption and diseased girls. The singer broke down and ditched his soggy tuxedo for the group's encore, but even a casually-dressed Valentine couldn't lose the collective heart of this audience.
