When Beach House announced they'd be tearing the plastic wrapping off their latest and greatest release Teen Dream with a record release soiree at Bell House in Brooklyn, a wild ticket nab ensued, with too few tickets being made available (I'm told less than half of the 350 capacity venue went to the general public) to the rush of fans waiting to greet the band, and their fascinating new album. Teen Dream represents a high water mark in the band's career, after-all, and fleshed out in public, it's easy to hear why.
First there are the songs; "Lover Of Mine, "Norway", "Take Care", and "Walk in the Park", to name a few. Teen Dream finds the intimacy of previous albums Devotion and the band's eponymous effort still lingering for those who find it. But somehow, someway, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand expand upon their own musical tapestry, introducing more instrumental elements, while tightening construction. Legrand's mysterious poetics that accompany the songs, remains the same.
With our latest concert release, that intimacy is appropriately compromised (just a bit)...the band adding a drummer to help whirl their woozy sound around the Bell House's open configuration. Packed warm and tight on a cold, January evening, the sold out audience inhaled the band's music like some miraculous gas. It would blanket the crowd, seep in to their blood stream, and ultimately make it's way like some happy kick to the heart and head. What a feeling...what a band. - David Pitz
