Show Review

The cover of Portugal. The Man's latest album In The Mountain In The Cloud is a psycho-swirl of interesting imagery. Peeking out behind geometric patterns, scales of inky doodles, and splotches of eye grabbing hyper-colors are the band members (or parts thereof), illustrated alongside a variety of companion creatures. It's a curious world they inhabit, this mountain in the cloud...abstract yet inviting, and relatable despite singularity.

It's a visual companion that shares a lot in common with the music these Alaska natives create - classic songwriting and thoughtful narratives, warped by the band's unique impulses to color the corners of their music in unexpected ways. Look no further than our newest session with the band; one made possible by both our friends at KEXP and The Ace Hotel. Stripped down ever so slightly, the band rolled through three numbers, as well as spent a few moments in between songs touching on their time together as a band, as well as what they were hoping to say with this, their latest and greatest album (if you've heard it, you know they say a lot). The session plays like an informative gathering with one of rock's most interesting current phenomenon. Like everything Portugal. The Man go for, it's familiar, ever so strange, and compelling all at once.
