Alive and Kickin': Keep an Eye on Dead Confederate.

These guys sure have been making a lot of noise this past year. After stellar reviews opening for the likes of R.E.M at SXSW, Dead Confederate's full length debut, Wreckingball, was unveiled earlier this month that had one critic on their MySpace page quoted as saying, "It's heavy, it's deep, it's direct... it's Tha Carter III of rock records." Genre crossing praise doesn't get much higher Lil' Wayne (but then again, few things do).

A five piece ambient rock band assembled out of Athens, Georgia, Dead Confederate share Weezy's space-y, Codeine glazed progressiveness, but sound just a bit more like the bearded love child of Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Their self-titled debut EP came out earlier this year and is a mind numbing combination of 70's arena rock, heavy, anvil strapped melody, and a distinctively deliberate southern howl.

The EP's opening track, "Memorial Day Night" picks along with an acoustic heaviness reminiscent of Elliott Smith in his glory days, while "The Rat" and "Tortured Artist Saint" are eerie, arena rock crescendos that sound like they could have been B-Sides to Dark Side of the Moon. "Get Out" reverberates along with melodically uplifting U2-esque guitars, while "Shadow the Walls" concludes the album with a haunting buildup that snarls back into heavy rock territory with both youthful tenacity and old school tenure. Weezy F. Baby indeed.

Definitely keep your eye out for good things yet to come from these guys.- Chris Gayomali

Wrecking Ball and Dead Confederate EP are both available now.
