Busdriver is one of those rare hip hop artists hipsters should adore. Literate, clever, self aware, he references brand names and life styles in sharp rhythms and lines, while keeping in tune with the dreamy, spacey, electronic production of Daedelus and Nobody throughout the songs ofJhelli Beam. If for any reason you forget the hard to dismiss lyrics for a moment, Busdriver's beats and non-stop slew of words stand on their own, with a strength in urgency, pounding rhythm, and rolling momentum.
"Split Seconds (Between Nannies and Swamis)" opens the album with a sort of split personality; beat and melody that Busdriver manipulates to a molded pressure building in society's demand for extremes, while he claims, "I've only drawn guns/on construction paper with pastel sticks." In the "Flight of the Bumblebees" melody driven "Me-Time (With the Pulmonary Palimpsest)", a quick and wise string of lyrics, scratchy repeated beeps, and distorted choruses capture a perfect self obsessed, politically dangerous society.
"Scoliosis Jones" accelerates with a dark doom in echoed choruses that sounds distant from its' fatal realities, and the frantic pace of the verses. "Least Favorite Rapper" is perhaps the epitome of his irony laced vision, ridiculing his own and guest Nocando's standing as, you might have guessed, least favorites because of their unusual subjects and identities that do not play to expected stereotypes. "Sorry, Fuckers" is a parody, his twisted deliverance of a club anthem. The lyrics are absolutely on point, ripping on effeminate, helpless hipsters and the beaver teeth girls who'll be easily transfixed by his world...the one "with unloved lady's men/eschewing life through a dumb 80's trend."
